KARAKA SPRING SALE-Next Friday-25Sep09

1....For an intending newcomer to horse ownership in New
Zealand, there is an fresh opportunity for buying coming up
in a week's time at the Karaka Sales Centre.

2....The advantage is that the present owners wish to sell
these horses so you don't have to beg or twist their arm,
as well, information regarding their breeding and family
ability is available in the published catalogues well in advance
of the sale. Ideally, all these horses are at one venue, allowing
prospective buyers the opportunity to view all these horses
in a short period of time, and make worthwhile comparisons.
Don't rely on your memory. Make good sensible comments
on the Catalogue page, so you can refer to them quickly in
those very quick 2 or three minutes when the auctioneer is
making loud bid taking yells. Too late in the ring to make
judgements, assessments and hunt for faults. You need to
be well prepared in advance, do your sums and put your
limit price at the top of each page.

3....There are only 75 lots on offer here, 31 of them being
yearlings, 8 two year olds, 8 unraced stock, 4 racehorses,
24 brood-mares.

4...Make sure you have your paddocks or agistment all
set up. Sort out your insurance. Check your partners, hold
a meeting and make sure you have got written intentions,
money limits and agreements all sorted. From heresay situations
I would estimate that the majority of partnerships have problems
so it will save much future anguish to pre-empt problem areas.

5...Make sure everyone in the group is aware and clear about
the level of financial committment required and the length of
time of the partnership.

6...You need to be clear about what your goals are, so do
your homework thoroughly and get good professional advice.

7...Selecting from within the COMMERCIAL FRAMEWORK
is important because if it is not comercially desirable, you may
find that no one else will want it, or be willing to buy its progeny,
so you are liable to lose money the moment you get the horse
home as well as be faced with giving away the horse or its
progeny for less than your investment, and that is bad business.

8...Remember to aim for the top 6 or 7% where horses have a
good chance of earning enough to pay for their purchase,
agistment, and all racing costs. That is a selection of just 1
horse from every 17 you thoroughly investigate.

9...If we relate that to the numbers in this sale, then you
would be limiting your investigation and selection to one of
the 4 top ranked horses in the sale. If your selection stands
out, then it will probably attract the attention of other would
be buyers, so it is important to stick fast to the realistic
valuation you have assessed the horse at and which won't
put too much stress on your finances. Your valuation
should reflect your group's ability to finance the purchase
and also the ongoing racing or breeding costs.

10..How would you select these possible 4 best horses?

a....Look for PROVEN sires over NON-PROVEN,
because the majority of new cedentialled sires will
eventually prove to be disappointing or relative failures.

b...Look for good racing ability in the first 3 dams.
or a family that has produced lots of winners or STAKES
WINNERS because that represents the CLASS factor.

c...Look for good crosses, or horses bred the way top
horses have been bred previously.

d...Look for SPEED close up somewhere in the pedigree.
Hard to win races without having competitive speed.

e...Check great racehorses, and make sure the breeding
methods in their pedigrees are appearing and working
in your selected pedigree.

f...CHECK YOUR HORSE OUT PHYSICALLY.
Good balance, speed or stamina conformation
according to its pedigree. Constitution, good hooves,
legs, action, temperament, good doer, accurate leg
alignment and action. Or limit faults to acceptable
ones if there are several absolutely outstanding
traits that would ensure top performance.

8..Having extended these 75 pedigrees out to 10 generations,
we found there were some that had good indexes and by
checking them against each other, it is possible to RANK
ALL PEDIGREES on more than 50 traits.

9...The best idea would be to look very carefully at all those
horses that made the TOP 10 on any of the lists. These
would be the nucleous group to investigate fully to find that
top horse among the possible 4 best ones.

10...As you get more experienced, you will get better and
better at recognising good conformation, good sires, good
families, good pedigrees and other beneficial traits.
------------------------------------------------------------
11..Here is the RANGE for linebreeding for these 75 horses.
11 index = 1 horse- 10 index = 1 horse- 9 = 3 horses-
8 = 11 horses, 7 =16 horses - 6 = 12 horses - 5 = 16 horses
- 4 = 12 horses- 3 = 3 horses.

Generally speaking, the higher the index, the more pre-potent
the sire or dam would be, the more chance of better combinations,
the more chance of hitting pre-potency, the more chance of
beneficial build-ups, better Matching and more Intricates.

Checked out 6,524 BROODMARES that left 2 or more
STAKES WINNERS...and 1,317 had linebreeding indexes
over 10..so some very high indexes among the best proven
broodmares.
------------------------------------------------------------
12...Number of duplicated ancestors in pedigrees are quite
important, although the sex they are, the position and several
other items can really enhance the situation.

26 = 1 horse, 25 = 2 horses, 24 = 3 horses, 23 = 2 horses
22 = 4 horses, 21 = 6 horses, 20 = 4 horses
Of the 6,524 multiple Stakes Winner producing mares
mentioned above, 1,749 had more than 25 duplicated
ancestors within 7 generations.
-----------------------------------------------------------
13...Balance comes in several forms and outputs into
some quite worthwhile advantages.

Here is one expression...Over 60% = 9 horses
1,163 multiple Stakes Producing broodmares had
more than 60% balance.
----------------------------------------------------------
14...Genetic relative crosses
Over 300 = 1 horse, Over 200 = 13 horses, Over 180 = 9

Over 2,664 broodmares that left 2 or more Stakes winners
had over 300 genetic relative crosses.
----------------------------------------------------------
15..Average wins for first 31 MALE ancestors
Over 12 = 1 horse, 11 = 13, 10 = 19, 9 = 9 horses

848 outstanding broodmares had their first 31 male
ancestors average more than 11 wins each
---------------------------------------------------------
16..Average wins for first 31 FEMALE ancestors
Over 5 = 2 horses, 4 = 16, 3.5 = 13, 3 = 10 horses

Over 972 outstanding broodmares that left 2 or more
Stakes Winners had their first 31 female ancestors
average more than 4 wins.
--------------------------------------------------------
17..F4 method
Over 30 = 3 horses, 20 = 1, 15 = 5. 10 = 14 horses

1,194 outstanding broodmares had 30 or more
F4 crosses.
-------------------------------------------------------
18..MATCHING..
200+ = 2 horses, 170 = 3, 160 = 7, 150 = 4 horses

Here is a biggie. 5,631 outstanding broodmares had
indexes for MATCHING over 200.
----------------------------------------------------
19...HITTING PRE-POTENCY
80+ = 6 horses, 70+ = 3. 60+ = 10, 50+ = 6 horses

495 outstanding broodmares hit pre-potency greater
than 80%.
----------------------------------------------------
20..There are nearly 300 other ways you can RANK
a group of horses, so this can be extremely valuable
to help you make comparisons, and ensure your
selections have all the requirements to become an
outstanding galloper, or outstanding broodmare..

21...Of course when you run these measures across
a few hundred Champions most are very high on
a large number of the indexes, but several traits are
contradictory so they are usually very high on one
of the opposing traits.

22..Many outstanding horses have superior speed
in double strength which places a limitation on their
distance capacity, but they also have to have many
outstanding stayers in their background

23... Superior stayers have stamina in abundance
but also a fair amount of specialist speed if they
are to have that necessary speed or acceleration.

24...There are special indexes which can help to
measure these critical traits. If you don't have the
equipment to get these, then you need to source
this information.

25...Another good exercise to make an approximate
guess as to what distance or TYPE your horse is
leaning towards is to rule a page down the centre.
List about 10 or more stamina traits down the left
hand side, and the opposing speed trait down the right.
Tick each trait and see if the horse looks to have more
speed or more stamina.
