CHECKING OUT NZ SIRES FOR YOUR MARE

1...For new owners of a broodmare in the Waikato Region of
New Zealand, there is a valuable aid to assist you in selecting a
suitable stallion for your new broodmare, and that is the ANNUAL
Waikato Stud Tour.

2..Each year the Waikato branch of the Thoroughbred Breeders
Association arrange an Open Day to view Stallions around the
very fertile Matamata and Cambridge areas. Similar viewing of
stallions in the Auckland, Manawatu and Canterbury areas are
also very popular for breeders to see the established, the proven
as well as the new stallions.

3..These days are so popular and valuable because they are
timed just previous to the stud season and you can make good
comparisons of sires all on one day, plus get round a huge number
in much quicker time than if on your own, plus it's a huge time
saver for busy stud people where one showing allows an inspection
for up to 200 to 300 people, instead of bringing out the stallions
200 to 300 times for individual breeders.

4...The well established and serious breeders will have spent the
last several months at Sales, at Stables, at Bloodstock Agent's places
or in Industry related publications or Stud Books to find mares
that suited their requirements.

5..If you are a newcomer breeder, and have not purchased your
new mare yet, it will probably put you under pressure for this
season and may lead to snap decision making. I could write a
book about many people making snap decisions on their
purchases, and the majority of these have not turned out well.
PLEASE RESIST THE TEMPTATION

6..Over the last 30 years or so, it is very noticeable that these
impulsive buys are mostly resold or passed on within a few
years. Most of these resales lost money, and cost a lot of time
and effort, for no worthwhile gain. This is just not a good
business practice.

7...Make sure you do your homework thoroughly, inspect your
intending purchases for accuracy, for standout physical traits
and document carefully all the faults because they may come
back to haunt you in your foals.

8...You want the best possible successful ancestors up close,
you want the best possible conformation you can get, you
want the least number of faults, (you can tolerate minor ones,
but steer clear of major ones), you want as much speed
conformation within a middle distance framework as you can
get . If you put too much speed with too much speed, your foals
will probably go fast early and fade before the 1200m distance.

9..If you put too much stamina over more stamina, your chances
of having enough speed to win a race would be very limited.
That essential stamina usually comes with conformation that allows
for improvement with age, better shock absorbation equipment,
leaner muscles with more fatique resistance, longer stride for
ground covering advantage, and sometimes more relaxed
temperament and more soundness.

10..Make sure you have some really high class speed somewhere
up close in your pedigree, because that seems to be a vital component
in the makeup of the really outstanding gallopers. There are several
breeding methods in the makeup of the best broodmares which
seem to allow their progeny to have more speed and compete
successfully in the best Stakes Races.

11...Also of vital importance for your future broodmare is having
pre-potency, the result of the good selection proceedures we
have mentioned, but more importantly the line-breeding methods,
amount, position, build-up, hitting pre-potency, intricates,
intensity and specialization which are pre-eminantly important in
your mare's pedigree.

12..A final piece of advice here is that if your mare does have racing
ability, it stands to reason that you can transer this more easily to your
foals than having to bring this ability through several generations
of undistinquished ancestors. In many of these cases some faults may
have become entrenched, and if you proceed with intensifying the
pedigree by good matching ancestors techniques, you may have to
contend with very strong negative faults.

13...No matter how brilliant or talented your foals are, they can
be struck low by unsoundness, so this is a major trait to select for.

14..The biggest problem of all with racehorses IS LACK OF SPEED.
If youe foal is not fast enough, you won't win races, and the costs will
exceed the costs of production, training and racing, so look very
intently at all the essential speed conformation factors in your
broodmare purchase, and all the high class speed horses in her
pedigree, as well as the very importance speed breeding principles
in her pedigree.

15...NOW YOU KNOW MOST OF THE REQUIREMENTS
FOR YOUR NEW MARE, IT SHOULD BE A SIMPLE MATTER
OF TAKING YOUR TIME, CHECKING OUR A FEW
DOZEN MARES, MAKING A WISE CHOICE AND MAKING
SURE YOU HAVE GOT ALL YOUR PRINCIPLES RIGHT
TO SELECT A HIGH CLASS STALLION FOR HER.
