MODERATE PERFORMANCE IN FIRST 2 DAMS

1…If you have read the article previously written about our un-raced
2yo colt called RED MAGIC-(Istidaad - Catseeka), you will have
seen that I was a bit concerned about 4 or 5 things in the pedigree.

2…If you are a newcomer to racing or ownership, you will find
yourself in such a situation in the future, because if you list about 40
desirable traits/strengths/features that you would like to see in your
horses pedigree or conformation, then in all probability, you will not
find your horse has every box ticked.
So you will have to assess each trait and see just what you have, and
work out if your horse has enough superior traits to outweigh the
faults that you can see. All the faults of course need to be within
tolerable limits, and one very bad fault might be a deal-breaker.

In that case, be highly selective, and move on to the next horse.

3….Here is an example to illustrate the point.
..You want PERFECT front legs……Your horse may toe out slightly
..You want PERFECT back legs…….May be slightly bent, or sickle
..You want 1m7sec 1200m SPEED..May prove to be a 1m10s horse
..You want 3m15sec 3200m STAYING ABILITY…May plug and
get round in 3m25s
..You want PERFECT BALANCE….Might be loaded in shoulders
or be light muscled in hindquarters
..You want PRICE OF $20,000...may cost you $38,000 plus GST.

4….Many people I come across make snap buying decisions in seconds
and certainly do not have a prepared 40 item checklist. It allows them
to boost hype, bias and self delusion, so the main feature that
would guide their futures would be just LUCK or CHANCE.

5…FINANCE and BUSINESS should be based on facts, budgets
and thorough knowledge. YOU NEED A SOUND PLAN
FOR SUCCESS.

6…..RED MAGIC has a problem with his knees and hind leg in
an accident that worries me a bit, but the Vet thinks he will be fine,
so have to accept that opinion & put him into work, and see how
he copes with the stress of racing.

7….It is a worry if he will have enough speed to outweigh his staying
ancestry, but there are several methods to promote speed in his
pedigree, and he is an impressive mover in the paddock, so we are
hoping he has that essential speed to assist his staying potential.

8…One of the bigger worries is that his imported USA dam
CATSEEKA was not a big race winner(Although she was a race
winner) and the grand -dam was unraced-(But her 4 foals have all
been winners). All the rest of the dams out to 5 generations have
averaged over 2.6 Stakes Winners each.

9….This article is an attempt to reassure us that the standout
crosses in his pedigree could actually work on the racetrack, and
to help you realize that LITERALLY hundreds of really
outstanding gallopers have very limited ability in their first 2 dams.
This means that you may be able to rationalize your future pedigrees
if you are unable to tick the box for really outstanding racing ability
in your first 2 dams.

10.However, except for a handful of these pedigrees, the examples
listed below have some really outstanding ancestors, and some
brilliant and complicated breeding methods.

11…Although I am indicating that many really outstanding horses
do have a lack of racing ability in the first 2 dams, I would still
advise you to actively look for horses that have significant ability
in the first or second dam, because I believe that your chances of
success could be up to 10 times better.

12…The sheer number of outstanding horses, and the sheer merit of
their ability shown many times over, gives me huge confidence that
this colt has a really good chance of his outstanding genetic crosses
being able to help him to win some races.

13….To get the following list of horses, I checked a broodmare
sale Catalogue of an auction being held in the last few days here in
New Zealand, a book of Australasian Champions, 6 years of
NZ SW, and a local Waikato sale catalogue held over 30 years ago.

They are listed below if you would like to check any of the records.

17…One of the inconsistencies here, which is very hard for the
mind to get around is the fact that there is none, or almost no ability
for 2 or 3 generations in a row along the dam line. And then when
put mainly to sires that themselves in the majority of cases were
not top class, suddenly comes forth with outstanding racing ability.

18...This means that there are more important principles such as
breeding intensity and outstanding gallopers back in the pedigree
which have to be taken into account when assessing your matings.

19…I have heard hundreds of times how bad bred many of these
good horses are, but when you examine the pedigrees in total,
there are multiple standout ancestors lurking reasonably close up
in the background of every one of these pedigrees.

20…If you are a newcomer to pedigrees, or buying, closely examine
THE WHOLE PEDIGREE to make sure nearly all the background
ancestors are high class. Don’t accept other peoples ill considered
opinions. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, set your own standards,
and take responsibility for your actions when they have been
the result of well considered research.

21…I have compiled every pedigree here out to 15 generations, and it is
euphoric to keep seeing brilliant breeding methods in the backgrounds
over and over. There are fantastic build-ups, complicated structures,
reinforced patterns, intricate ancestries and its mind-boggling just trying
to see all the happenings in the pedigrees that Nature is rewarding with
either speed, or stamina, or class.

22….Another hard to understand concept here is the fact that so
many of these examples have toughness, soundness and an ability
to race often against the best available horses. I went into the
pedigrees and found there were good ancestors in the background,
just don’t understand how you can harness it at will. Seems that
over large numbers, this ability can be passed on to a small
percentage of descendents. What struck me was the intense ancestry
and breeding methods that helped pre-potency and
speed/stamina/class allowed these horses to have the ability to win
these races, but the conformation to withstand the pressure was
reliant on physical traits passed on by the ancestry, and this was
in the background.

23…Quite a number of these great gallopers had conformation
problems, and this is a natural consequence of having the nearest
two dams with limited ability. One of the major problems is that
very inbred animals have faults doubled up and pass this on.

24…Some brilliant horses from certain lines seem to have brilliance
and fragility in double doses and they are passed on in combination
and you can’t get one without getting the other.

25…Bonecrusher had a pronounced leg deviation which came down
like many others from his Star Kingdom line. So many of the
Oncidium and Gate Keeper stars broke down because of the legacy
from the Alcide sire line. There are traits of unsoundness,
temperament, lack of size, sulking, quitting, slow starters, hard track
specialists, wet track specialists, and coarse bone which are very
well known in the progeny of sires at stud at the moment, but libel
and law-suits favour secrecy and inhibit accurate information being
made available which would help breeders.

26….If this list seems extensive, and astounding while illustrating
the point that limited ability in the 1st 2 or 3 dams has resulted in
hundreds of top line horses, you may be blown away by the fact
that I found nearly 200 other horses that were only slightly inferior
to these, and which could qualify, and some with even better ability
that would have qualified on one or two limited dams, but had some
performance somewhere so these examples were passed over,
and not included…So the above list is by no means exhaustive,
and a case could be made for listing nearly 300 other examples..
SO, DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THIS TRAIT, IF THE REST
OF THE CRITERIA IS OUTSTANDING.

27…A development over the last 10 to 15 years has seen
SELECTION operating in the main yearling sales.
This business inititive has put a PREMIUM on
PERFORMANCE along the dam line and BLACK TYPE
performers in the near removes of the family.

28..The result has been a doubling of putting the BEST TO
THE BEST, the selection of fewer high quality commercial
Sires, just about every top mare going to one of a dozen
High class sires, a big lowering of quality going to fringe
Sires outside the top dozen, AND MUCH HIGHER PRICES
FOR THE SELECT or COMMERCIAL YEARLINGS.

29…The greater returns have resulted in more money for
the auctioneers, for the breeders operating at this level,
plus higher Stud Fees for the best stallions and their owners,
and the ability to fund expensive SHUTTLE sires that
possess superior pedigrees and racing ability.

30….Overall, the rising costs have put a large burden on
the owners who pick up the tab for all costs in the industry.
Their costs have double and tripled, stakes up until recently
had moved upwards very slowly, and the owners now have
to specialize towards SPEED, otherwise they would not be
able to compete even in Maiden races which are run at a
much faster rate than previously.

31…Unless owners can find more money to compete with
buying the best bred yearlings, pay more for all Industry
related costs, put emphasis on speed, they RUN THE RISK
OF BEING LEFT BEHIND.

32..This is why SYNDICATION has increased dramatically in
recent years. However, very sharp business people have added
another dimension where owners have had huge padded costs
added to their already high priced involvement in this Industry.
NEW OWNERS NEED TO INVOLVE THEMSELVES MORE,
GATHER MORE INFORMATION, MAKE BETTER DECISIONS.

33..These examples here show clearly that the business decisions
to make money are not necessarily in line with Nature’s principles.
All the business people concerned certainly have increased their
chances of making an increased profit(At the expense of the owners)

34..These commercial yearlings that are making 5 and 10 times the
price of bygone years are often OVERFED, UNSOUND, LACK
CONSTITUTION.

35…THEY ALSO HAVE A HIGH FAILURE RATE. Would be
interesting to make a statistical study of every commercial yearling
from the Select Sale for 10 years. In the absence of accurate
information, I would guess about 1 in 10 would ultimately end up
as successful racehorses and pay their way. (90% FAILURE RATE?)

36…Of course, if you go the CHEAPO way, then your task would
be definitely harder to find a good racehorse that would pay it’s way.

37…As a matter of course, you would have to contend with less
successful breeding by sire and dam, less performance up close
in the ancestry, more faults, usually less pre-potent parents,
less well related or successful family, less qualified people
putting the principles together, less qualified rearing, and less
chance of getting to the best trainers.

38…YOUR ODDS OF GETTING A GOOD HORSE FROM
BELOW OR OUTSIDE THE COMMERCIAL ELITE COULD
BE AS LOW AS 1 HORSE IN A HUNDRED, even though we
have given a couple of hundred examples with possible 300 more
highly successful racehorses.

39…Don’t be misled, the odds are against you .SO THIS SHOWS
HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK,
LESSEN THE RISKS, & INCREASE YOUR CHANCES
WITH GOOD JUDGEMENT.
