ISTIDAAD, CATSEEKA, DANS'ORE

1...My first articles were all text, so am attempting to introduce
some visual aids in the form of photographs.
2...Above is a photo of ISTIDAAD-1992, the sire of our future
racehorse RED MAGIC-2006.
3...ISTIDAAD has the lines of a finely made staying horse. Strong
bay in colour, dense bone, exceptional temperament, good
constitution, fine build, but with good hind quarter power.
4...A couple of weeks ago (Sep 09) when his very good racing son
GINGA DUDE won the main flat race at Ellerslie, ISTIDAAD was
2nd on the NZ sires table, and this week he is still up there in 4th
place after 2 months of the season gone. NB...GINGA DUDE
RAN A GREAT RACE TODAY -[3 Oct 2009] in the $1,200,000
KELT CAPITAL AND GOT 2ND BY HALF A LENGTH.
5..Apparently, he has not been given commercial opportunities
by NZ top breeders, having RECEIVED no mares that have ever
qualified their progeny for the Premier or Select yearling sales.
6..For the last few seasons he has been averaging a winner per
week which is better than all but the top few sires in NZ that
have been given hundreds of the best mares in NZ each year.
7....Even though he has served a lot of mares, the majority of
them had very limited ability in the first few dams, and many of
their progeny were not raced but sent to the polo fields.
8..Because they were finely made, polo pony size, very keen and
had endless bottom, many have excelled in this field and been in
keen demand, to the detriment of an increase in his racing statistics.
9..The other negative is that ISTIDAAD has a specialist pedigree
which requires selection for speed & matching bloodlines to hit his
pre-potency and he has had only a handful of these suitable mares.
10..In spite of very average mares, lack of selected mares, lack
of pre-potent mares, or suitable mares, ISTIDAAD has shown he
is one of NZ's better or PROVEN sires.
11..He has left 6 STAKES WINNERS to date, and a dozen Stakes
Placed horses. For the last five seasons he has been 11th on the NZ
sires table, 21st, 6th, 8th and 16th...and is currently 4th this season.

12...ISTIDAAD was a high class racehorse. He was very sound,
has fine dense bone and was a top stayer, running 3rd in the Eng G1
St Leger, 2nd in G2 Pr. of Wales S, 3rd in G3 Goodwood Gordon
Stakes as a 3yo in England, earning P75,155.
13..In Australia he raced at 4, 5 and 6yrs earning $1,594,410.
His 6 wins included G1 Australian Cup, G2 Moonee Valley Gold
Cup, G2 St George S, G2 St George S a 2nd time.
14..His placings were also impressive. 3rd G1, 3rd G2, 3rd L,
4th G1, 2nd G1, 2nd G1, 3rd G2, 2nd G1.

15..Above is ISTIDAAD taken last year with my wife Helen and
daughter Barbara who are both partners in the future racehorse
son of ISTIDAAD that we have named RED MAGIC.

16...The mare above is CATSEEKA...She was imported from
the USA as was ISTIDAAD. She is average sized at about 15'3".
She was placed and a winner here in New Zealand. Even though
she has significant speed in her pedigree, and is balanced line-bred
4x3 to Champion galloper and sire NORTHERN DANCER,
her make and shape is more like a middle distance horse.
17...Her sire is MOUNTAIN CAT-1990, (a son of the outstanding
speed sire STORM CAT), he proved to be a very precocious 2yo
and 3yo in the USA and was the first horse of his year to win
over $1 million dollars. Final tally = 6wins,11starts$1,478,901.
18...His dam was by Champion KEY TO THE MINT-14wins,
a son of the very fast GRAUSTARK which won 7 in a row.
19...His 2nd dam was by Champion 2yo and 3yo NEVER BEND,
--13 wins, and out of top racemare DANDY PRINCESS-15wins
20..CATSEEKA;s dam was unraced but her 4 foals were all winners.
Her sire MINING was a G1 winning son of brilliant speed sire
MR PROSPECTOR . MINING was very inbred and won 6 of
his 7 races worth $264,030.
21..The third dam was a good racemare. Won 2 races, 7 places,
$29,440-(Dam of 2 SW)...a daughter of Champion galloper and
Champion Sire NORTHERN DANCER -(14 wins) out of good
racemare DORIS WHITE-4wins, 9 places, 25 starts, $34,980.
She was a good broodmare that left 3 Stakes Winners.

22...Here is a photo of our pride and joy RED MAGIC at about
15 months of age. He had just come through a 7 week drought
where no hay was available in the district, and because he showed
a lot of fight and wouldn't load to come out to our place, Brian
Corbett kindly had Aaron Taata above sort him out at his property
above for 6 weeks.
23...This is at the end of that period and Aaron said he was very
light in condition as you can see above, but he was a good doer.
He also had a good action, was taught to lead, load, was front
feet shod, tied up, covered, and backed. Because he was so light
in condition and it rained for most of the time there and was very
boggy, Aaron did not do any pacework with him.

24...Here is RED MAGIC being tied up, with the other 4 members
of our syndicate: Karen, Carl, Barbara and Helen looking on.
Notice that he is a rich chestnut colour, (Just like SECRETARIAT),
with a similar type of blaze. If you look at the previous photos, you
will see that his sire is a dark bay colour, and his dam is a light bay
colour.
25..This means his sire and dam have inherited a bay gene from
one parent and a chestnut gene from the other parent. At conception
the two chestnut genes which are recessive have united.
If you look at the pedigree of HYPERION, you can see that he
got his chestnut coat colour from the chestnut ancestors behind
his bay sire GAINSBOROUGH and bay dam SELENE in the
same manner.
26...RED MAGIC is linebred 4x5 to SECRETARIAT, plus he
has 2 mares that have similar bloodlines, so we are hoping these
strong ancestry crosses & background buildup can be beneficial .

27...The mare above is DANS'ORE, a 1994 mare bred in the USA.
For one reason or another, she was unraced, but all her 4 progeny
to race have been winners. She is a well muscled and strongly made
mare. Her pasterns indicate speed, as does her muscling, her canon,
her forearm, her gaskin, her rein, and her hind quarters.
28..Her sire MINING was a G1 winner, her grandparents MR
PROSPECTOR and NORTHERN DANCER were exceptionally
fast, and next sires BUCKPASSER-(25wins) and BLACKBEARD
(6wins) were top racehorses.
29...She has good size, and when I went up to check out her
height, she looked about 16 hands and perhaps half an inch.
She made about $55,000 at this sale last year which was a good
price for a 14yo mare. We were hoping she would pass on her
good muscling, speed and size to our horse.
30..However, it seems that we have missed out on size, because
our youngster was a first foal which sometimes works against
good size for horses. Plus he was foaled in mid summer, 20th Jan,
2007, which means his nutrition from the mare would have been
lessened by dry summer pasture. He was the product of two
middle distance horses that would give him a lighter staying frame
and reduce the overall muscling. He was linebred 3 times to the
smallish NORTHERN DANCER so by being smaller himself,
he is true to type. Finally, he went through a 7 week drought where
the whole Waikato region was bare and brown, and he got no
supplementary food, so it knocked his condition quite badly.
31...We have a long way to go to prove we have got a racehorse
that can win a race or 2.
32...We thought that we could pre-train him starting 1st July,
take him through to a trial in September, win a maiden race within
three starts before Christmas, and after a summer break, come back
and be quite competitive perhaps March,April and May which are
our Autumn months.
33..However, the horse and Phil has told us that he needed the 7
weeks pretraining, and after a 3 week spell, Phil said he would
need another pre-training spell just to get him to a trial, with
probably little chance of getting into a race before another
necessary summer spell.
34...Therefore, based on that information, my plan is to give him
extra time to grow and mature. He has been home for 5 weeks
now. I'm feeding him really well and he has got a nice shiny coat.
He certainly likes his feed. Best of all is the fact that he is lying
down a lot, so he may be doing some growing and maturing. I'm
planning to give him an extra 2 months in the paddock before going
back to Phil Stevens about 1st December. That will give him plenty
of time to get through pre-training and a trial so that he can race
seriously through March, April and May if he comes up well.

35...Above is another photo of his grand-dam DANS'ORE. I was
particually impressed with her at this sale, because she represented
a contribution of quite a bit of speed to the pedigree.

36..Until I saw her, all I had to go on was the lighter frame of both
CATSEEKA and RED MAGIC, so I resigned myself to having a
late maturing three year old, and likely to hit his straps even later as
a 4yo.

37...Above is the photo of our "SECRETARIAT" with his
staying build and white blaze the day he arrived at our place, which
was in May 2008, about 17 months ago. He was 15 months old.
38...Although "LIGHT" or "FINE" in build, he seems to have about
seven or 8 other conformation points that are quite good and make
the intended transition to a racing prospect worthwhile.

38...Above is Syndicate member Carl McComb and RED MAGIC
is possibly the first horse he has ever handled. Carl has delved into
all the horse books in my library and has really got the bug. Carl
is nearly 6ft 3 inches, so makes MAGIC look a bit small. Carl and
I have lunged him on many occasions when he made the drive over
from Tauranga on alternate weekends.
39...As RED MAGIC got older, he did get much bolder and he
definitely was not a learners horse, and tended to bite and use his
front feet, despite much corrective discipline. Carl is pretty tough
and he and Karen didn't seem to mind too much the big bite marks
they got when they lost their awareness of where the colt was.

40...RED MAGIC stretching out on the long rope. Carl and the colt
learned quickly, and we noticed the colt was better for the exercise.

41..RED MAGIC was always keen in his work and usually
controlled, but did have his moments. If he got away with anything,
he always tried it again, and needed a lot of practice to ensure he
was doing the correct option. We found he was certainly a people
horse and was always very friendly, but without being nasty, he was
definitely dangerous if you were in the wrong place or turned your
back on him. This workout was about 3 months after we got him,
and at the end of winter. His coat was thick.

42...Several month further on and RED MAGIC has his summer
coat up in the hill paddock next to Mary Dobb's place.

43...Another Syndicate member, Barbara getting ready for a
serious lungeing session with the colt.

44...Above is Barbara lungeing the colt. After this the colt got quite
difficult, and Barbara settled down to having a baby, we got tied up
with piles of work, the colt had an accident and we took off for a
month over seas for a break after all our work, so he wasn't worked
for 3 or 4 months, just got fed well.

45...Here is a nice photo of the colt just before his accident.
He had a nice summer coat and was growing well.

46...This photo shows that he had matured a bit, he had got the
benefits of good feeding. He shows he has a nice hind leg, good
hind quarters and pasterns are the right length to expect a bit of
speed within his staying framework.

47....The colt got caught up in an iron frame and chains, and his four
legs were all severely lacerated. He had the chains around his neck
for a couple of hours and nearly choked himself to death. While
getting him undone, the Vet said he might have to put him down.

48...For nearly 3 weeks before we went over to Australia, I hosed
him several times a day, and put plenty of antiseptic ointments and
washes on to keep infection away while he healed.
49...The vet gave him a barrage of injections and each time he came
he was amazed at how quickly he healed. RED MAGIC never
showed any pain from his deep wounds and never left a feed.

50...Helen is raking the cut grass on the driveway. This is one of
about 10 van loads of grass that I cut, raked up, spread out, dried,
turned, wheelbarrowed and staked in the garage.
51...For 3 months through the first winter, I remember the hours
I spent pulling long grass to fill 3 large sacks each day.

52...Above is another load being dried, and turned so it can be
stored in the garage. We have a full quarter of the garage filled
right to the roof, and only just enough room to get the 3 vehicles in.

53...Helen is having a lot of trouble with her double hip operations,
plus knee cartilege problems and bone displacement in the foot,
but has always helped with the colt, and the grass collecting.
54...However, her lack of mobility was a problem when the colt
played up, and she found it very difficult with the uneven slopes and
surface of the paddocks.

55...Above, the colt has made a good recovery, and starting to
put back on a little bit of weight.

56...Starting to feel very well. Legs and neck have healed and
plans being formulated to sort out pre-training options.

57...Above, RED MAGIC at his favourite pasttime of eating.
He is getting his feet trimmed before going off to pre-training.

RED MAGIC....Gelded 2nd July, 2009

RED MAGIC...Taken 2 months ago, before going into training.

============================================

1...Below is a photo of RED MAGIC when we first went to
check him out as a 13 month old colt in Jan 2007. He was one
of a dozen N.H.T yearlings that were being prepared for export
to England. A French buyer selected him as the best conformed
and best type in the paddock and wanted to buy him, but our 2
daughters were very keen to race him, as planned.

2....The first photo was taken of our colt RED MAGIC about
two months ago by part owner Barbara and being held by her
husband Carl McComb. It was taken about 14 months after the
second photo.

3...He was foaled here in New Zealand to Northern Hemisphere
time...(20th Jan, 2007)...so the 1st photo shows him at 2years
and 5 months of age. I had been trying very hard to overcome
his late start in life plus the further handicap where his dam
would have had less grass and made less milk for him being
foaled in the in the middle of summer.

4...He was small and very light when we saw him, then suffered
further set backs when he went through a 7 week drought with
no hay available, then had persistant rain when he was broken in.
I gave him plenty of feed during the last year, but had to be very
careful with grain, because as he grew he developed a tendency
to chase about 6 or 7 lots of people out of his paddock, which
was disconcerting because he never ever took a backward step.

5...I have previously helped serve mares with 5 different stallions
and trained a 3yo and a 4yo colt side by side to win races so
had no real problems with handling him, but he always took
advantage of anyone else who was unaware of his wayward
tendencies. He tended to bite and run over them, and although
I was always on guard, he also got me three times when I was
momentarily distracted.

6...The picture above was taken a couple of weeks before we
loaded him onto the float to go to pre-training in Matamata on
Monday 29th June, 2009.

7...We had plans to race him as a colt and if he displayed the
ability we hoped he would have, then we were going to stand
him at stud in Australia where there are hundreds of mares with
bloodlines to match his duplicated lines of Secretariat, (16wins,
$1,316,808 and Nashua,-(22wins-$1,288,568) plus close up
lines of outstanding sires DANZIG-(200 SW), ROBERTO-
( 86 SW), STORM CAT, ( 163 SW), MR PROSPECTOR,
( 175 SW), and NORTHERN DANCER-(147 SW),

8..These are among the most outstanding sires of Stakes
Winners in the world and there are only a handful of other
sires that are better or equal.

9...All these plans went for nought because when the colt
arrived at the pre-training facility belonging to Phil Stevens
in Matamata, he charged the staff, propped and lashed out
with both hind legs at another staff member.

10..The phone call that immediately came said geld
him, shoot him or take him away immediately. We were very
concerned because it had cost $1,500 to get him fully boken in
the previous March and April and we had done a lot of
handling, lungeing, saddle work, ramp-loading, feet-trimming
work etc to ensure he would have a good transition into the
pre-training phase of his education leading to full training
and racing.

11..However, I had good talks with Phil Stevens, plus our
ownership group, and the outcome seemed to be that his
lack of size, finely made build, general perception regarding
his sire Istidaad made him less of a stallion prospect than the
other 4 or 5 million dollar colts already being pre-trained in
the stable.

12..As well, Phil Stevens doubted he could be pre-trained
with the temperament and fight he displayed. Phil wouldn't take
him unless gelded, and he also doubted that the colt would be
able to concentrate on racing with his attitude and he said Mark
Walker wouldn't take him if he was a big problem.

13...In the end, our hand was forced, and the girls agreed
that it was better to have a tractable horse that would at least
have a chance of racing well, as against an unruly or savage
horse that no-one could handle, and that would have no stud
value if he could not be trained successfully.

14..For all newcomers into the breeding or racing game or
business, the situation or problem of gelding will arrise and
you will need to be prepared and ready to make decisions
according to your plan or situation.

15..Statistics are available in NZ showing foals by sires that
served 10 or more Stud book mares. Over the last 6 years
annual foal crops are shown as, 4,513 - 4,496 - 4,110 -
4,061 - 3,965 - 3,778 foals. The slide shows the influence
of a declining economy, but as approximately half of these
foals will be colts, decisions over gelding will reach about
a couple of thousand each year. This operation has only a
small risk for a few dozen younsters, and is usually routine.
One stud has done them for $200, but there is quite a big
propfit margin for vets that usually operate in the $350
to $400 range.

15...There are lots of good books and Vets available to give
you good information on the best time to geld to allow for the
best development of your horse, and to explain all the
advantages for general handling, for training and for
concentrating more successfully on a racing career.

16...For 20 years I have been compiling all the pedigrees of
every sire that has stood in New Zealand. At the moment I
have 276 NZ sires and can match every mare out to 15
generations and rank all the matings on dozens of breeding
principles. More than three quarters of NZ bred sires
and also imported ones just do not have the right bloodlines,
ancestry, race performance, pre-potency, location, opportunity
or breeding principles to succeed. This is the newcomers
biggest area of concern and you need to spend considerable
time and effort making sure you get the right sire.

17...However, over the last 40 years or so out of 100 to
200 New Zealand bred colts given opportunities at stud,
only a handful like Defaulter, Sobig, Vice Regal, Syntax,
Kingdom Bay, and O'Reilly have become resoundingly
successful and therefore very successful commercial sires.

18...This is a telling statistic to ensure a high rate of colts
are castrated for the many benefits that this operation offers.

THE STABLE IS GETTING BIGGER-Horse Number Two.

1.......This article is about an unraced 2yo Chestnut gelding by
SANDTRAP out of EMILY'S COMMAND and some of the
people involved in his breeding, ownership, racing syndicate
and future racing career.

2.....Our involvement begins with ANTHONY QUIRK and
wife ELAINE BUTTERWORTH, wanting to purchase a filly
for their syndicate at the Karaka Yearling sales. They had
already had a lot of success with horses and had purchased a
nice property north of Auckland and built a lovely home there.
In the photo above, Anthony is on the left, Elaine on the right,
with her mum Peggy and brother John in the middle.
Anthony's Dad Michael is a brother to my wife Helen.

3....They raced a durable gelding called OFFER NO BID.
As a yearling we thought he had a nice tough pedigree with
Sir Tristram as his dam sire. He was very small, his dam and
granddam were unraced, but his 3rd dam won the G1 South
Australian Oaks. Our assessment after he was bought was
for 6 or 7 wins and capable of winning in Open Class. He
did better and won 9 races including G3 Cornwall Hcp,
Listed Parliamentry Hcp, 2nd Cornwall Hcp,
2nd Parliamentry, 3rd G3 Rotorua Cup.

4..Another good horse was another durable slower developing
stayer called SUPER SCHEME.. He won 7 races including
Trentham's Summer Cup worth $69,000 but unfortunately
died before embarking on a promising hurdling career.
We thought he would be a little quicker maturing as he was
strongly built, and had some nice crosses to encourage speed.
Got him for half of the projected budget, so that was a bonus.
He was expected to win at least 5 or 6 races and was very
sound and was able to exceed expectations with good training.

5..Below is the pedigree of EMILY'S COMMAND, the dam
of the SANDTRAP unnamed Chestnut gelding-(Stable name
RILEY).

6....We analysed all the fillies at the sale and came up with
a very well made daughter of Centaine that fitted the budget
set at $40,000 for the syndicate. A top trainer was engaged
to do the bidding, but didn't turn up, and the other trainer
added a bid past the limit to get her, and thinking we had her,
got a shock when it was revealed a bidder behind us got her.

7...Of course the well made, nicely muscled quick looking
filly went on and won her first 2 races as a 2yo including a
Stakes race. However, they overdid her and strained her
immature system and she did not come back

8..We went back to the drawing board and checked out the
fillies that remained on the last day and found a small filly, with
some exceptional crosses, and the nicest temperament, and
a very accurate walk. We got her for just over $7,000
Anthony and Elaine named her EMILY'S COMMAND
after their little daughter Emily.

9...As you can see on the chart above, EMILY'S COMMAND
had almost no performance in the first few generations of her
pedigree. THIS IS THE HARDEST WAY TO GET A GOOD
RACEHORSE, AND YOU NEWCOMERS TO RACING
SHOULD MAKE A POINT OF INSISTING ON HAVING
GOOD PERFORMANCE IN THE SIRE, DAM AND
GRANDDAM. It makes sense to have this ability up close,
then you can intensify the pedigree with more confidence,
and have good conformation and speed traits more readily
available to pass on to your foal, and can expect better results.

10...Also, if your horse races well, you may be able to
capitalize on your success if other people would like to buy
it based on the good performing ancestors close up.
Because all expenses relating to breeding and racing are so
high, always try and breed within the commercial
umbrella, to help make some essential sales when success
comes your way.

11... Her sire THE COMMANDER was a big strong horse,
that won 2 trials. He went in the wind, but was race placed.
He had outstanding breeding, being a brother to top fillies
Tristalove-11w-G11, and Antwerp-8wins-LL, and three
quarter to $3.6 million yearling purchase Don Eduardo-G1-
$1,685,110, Octagonal-10xG1 5,892,231, Mouawad-G11 etc

12..Her dam ran 5 times and was a distant 4th, earning $275.
Her 2nd dam was unplaced 6 times and left 2 winners from
her 8 foals.. HARDLY VERY INSPIRING!

13..However, a master of pedigrees was at work here.
BILL PUNCH , a beef cattle and sheep breeder from Te Kuiti
bred Twice As Nice in conjunction with the Bakers, and then
had a hand in EMILY'S pedigree.

BILL was famous for breeding champion BONECRUSHER,
winner of 18 races, 11 Group 1 races and $2,353,720,
plus Counterfeit-5wL,4G11,4thVic Derby, OARSMAN-
6w-A Top ranked NZ stayer-WellingtonCup$300,000,
Fragile Asset-2w-G3, ENDLESS JOY-4w,2G1L,3G2,4L,
and Knucklebones-8wins. All these from very unfashionable
bloodlines, almost devoid of racing performance.

13...Bonecrusher was by a moderate sprinter that won
3 sprint races. His 1st dam was unplaced twice, his 2nd dam
was also unplaced twice, and 3rd dam was a maiden winner.

14..OARSMAN was by a maiden winner sire (The Son)
himself by a non winner sire called Noble Bijou. His dam was
an unplaced daughter of an unplaced sire-(Royal Loch-Injured
in 1st start). 2nd dam was an unplaced daughter of another
unraced sire-(Bold Edge)..3rd dam won 2 races, 4th dam was
unraced, and 5th dam was unplaced 4 times.

15...BILL PUNCH was there to see a couple of EMILY'S
COMMAND's wins and also came up to us at several of the
Stallion Parades to see how she was going.

16...These bloodlines give almost no expectation of any
worthwhile racing performance, but BILL looked extensively
into pedigrees and discovered the terrific concentrations that
also appear in all the pedigrees of such a brilliant thoroughbred
breeder like Frederico Tesio. It seems that this is almost more
important than breeding from Black Type parents on the
commercial method where more than 90% of royally bred
animals fail the racecourse test. We need to realize that after
the first 5 generations, the ancestors that are concentrated
there hundreds of times are outstanding gallopers and breeders
that had the best breeding ability to pass on the best traits to
the future generations. They have stood the test of time, and
these few hundred horses have ousted the hundreds of
thousands of other ancestors who failed to breed on and be
represented in pedigrees today.

17...BILL was able to breed 2 of the countrys best stayers
from exceptionally unfashionable pedigrees with reinforced
lack of ability. If you buy from the most fashionable
commercial bloodlines, you will get over 90% failures and it
will cost you several fortunes, unless you use extensive
pedigree analysis to sort out the the best from the rest.

18...Below is a photo of more people involved in this story.
My Mum and Dad are on the left and Helen and I are on the
right during one of our recent trips to Australia.
Dad has rung several times in the last few months and is quite
keen to see how the SANDTRAP-EMILY'S COMMAND
gelding is coming along. I've gone over the pedigree with him
and indicated there are nearly a dozen good horses bred on
similar principles and breeding.

19... Some examples are:
......TAPPY....7w,9p,31s-$87,025
......PARTEE..7wins..$116,337..LMataCup, 2G2,3G2
.....SHEKA...3wins..$88,875-Listed, Listed
.....INDIKATOR..6w,L-9p-$136,850
.....SANJURA....1w,5thG1-$31,875
.....SALADA......4wins, among several others.

20..This photo was taken a few months ago. Dad is NINETY
in a few months and Mum is EIGHTY SIX. They got a prize
on a couple of cruises for being married the longest.-(67yrs)

Dad has 2 lots of land and still feeds out each morning and
night, a number of his clients horses.. Several times, instead of
doing a bus ride back to the ship, we did a 4 mile, 5 mile and
7 mile walk back to the ship.
Dad is really fit and strides out, so he is very hard to keep
up with. His older brothers Ted (96yrs), Tom (95yrs),
Norm (3 weeks off 95), Jim (90) and Gladys (few weeks off
90) all lived to a good age.

Mum's sister Hazel is 96 and until recently was cooking all
her meals, cleaning her house unaided and doing gardening.
It is this sort of toughness that we need to select for in our
horses.

Helen's Mum recently passed away and she was 93, and
also had those tough Irish and Scottish genes.

21...In the photo above, you can see that Helen has killed us
with kindness, and perhaps if we were out doing a hard days
physical work, we would have a chance of living as long as
our parents. I suspect we are good doers which is another
trait we want to have in our horses.

22..In this photo at ANTHONYS place, he is in the
foreground, with 3 other syndicate members,
Helen-(sitting), Karen and Carl, in the background.

23..Syndicate members, Karen (our eldest daughter),
Carl (our Son-In-Law) and Barbara (our youngest daughter).
All very, very keen horse people, and eagerly waiting
for RED MAGIC and "RILEY" to start racing in the next
few months.

24..They have been very helpful to me with feeding, lungeing,
helping to worm, trim and shift RED MAGIC up the road
to the hill paddock even with cars and trucks whizzing by
on the main road.

24...Here is a photo of "RILEY", the 2yo SANDTRAP-
EMILY'S COMMAND 2yo gelding taken about 6 months
ago just after his actual 2nd birthday.

25..His dam has 9 very strong lots of INTRICATE
INBREEDING which can be stronger than linebreeding,
and more powerful if other crosses, methods and positions
are in place. The risk and problem is that if there is not
a lot of performance close up in the pedigree in the near
ancestors, then more common FAULTS can be doubled up.

In non-performing parents, there are probably many times
more faults in their make-up, and by intensifying a pedigree,
you are multiplying your chances many times over of getting
these FAULTS fixed in a double dose in your foals.

The aim of line-breeding is to double the speed traits, stamina
traits, soundness traits, so better ancestry is very important.

26...It is much harder to get the good breeding back further
to pass through very poorly performed parents and grand-
parents, so try very hard to get that good selection and
performance up close, and you might double your chances
of getting a btter racehorse and halve your chances of having
to CULL all the badly conformed youngsters.

27..The dam also has 173 of the multiple crosses which
dominate BILL PUNCHES pedigrees & TESIOS pedigrees.

As well there are 721 duplicated ancestors with 28,574
crosses. She has 68% balance.

169 male ancestors are 61% balanced.
16 female ancestors are 44% balanced.

671 chains of ancestors, strongest through ROUND TABLE.

36,766 ancestors duplicated to 15 generations.

155,088 ancestor double matchings out to 10 generations.

28.....There are several more importance happenings in the
pedigree and these indicate she should be a very prepotent
mare within her staying framework of selection, as long as
she gets a highly suitable matching sire.

29...SANDTRAP is a strongly made brown horse that
has good size and middle-distance conformation, although
his race record (6wins-$471,116) shows wins over 6f(G3),
6.5f(G3), 1 mile-(L), 6,5f-(G3), 5f-(L).

I suspect he was made to fit the USA pattern rather than be
trained for the 8 to 10 furlongs that he should have been
very capable at.

He has sired about 6 stakes winners, and has had large
books of mostly non commercial mares. Could be called
a useful sire and has been in the top 10 on the NZ Sires
List a couple of times. His stock are partial to softer going.

30....Above is another photo of the SANDTRAP-
EMILY'S COMMAND gelding taken just after his 2nd
birthday. He is a first foal and a recent note indicated he has
an extremely quiet nature, very easy to handle, had a good
action when he did two stints of breaking in and cantering
for a month or two each time, but is not too bright.
Anthony said recently that he was about 15 hands 1 or 2
inches at the moment, but I thought he looked about 15h1inch
6 months ago, so am surprized he is not 15h 3inches.
Anyway, Barbara is arranging for us to go up and see
him next Monday.

31...The bay 2yo gelding beside him is a different kettle of fish.
He is quick, temperamental, been pushed a little too early,
and may have some leg issues. His pedigree is twice as
concentrated on speedy USA bloodlines compared to "RILEY"

32..He is by Top ranked French Sprinter BERTOLINI-
2wG3, 2G111, 3G111, 2G233-P460,570...sire of 12SW.

Out of a broken pelvis (Unplaced 2x) daughter of USA
Champion 2yo RHYTHM-(6w-G11-$1,592532 from a
daughter of PERPETUAL (7wins) that left 2 Stakes Winners.

Some powerful crosses here, so very interesting to see just
what speed he has, and how he races. His yearling full
brother looks to be a good horse if he is taken along very
quietly by a top trainer. He has all the selection, speed,
crosses, conformation and build up to do well on the race
course, and it would not surprize if he won a Stakes Race.

The yearling full sister to "RILEY" looks to have more speed
and muscling and better type than her older brother which
looks to be more of a stayer. She has all the right crosses
and type to win a 3yo Fillies stake race in NZ, so will follow
her career with interest as well.

MILLIONAIRE earning racehorses.

1...There has been a lot of focus recently on the new Millionaires
MINE THAT BIRD-(5wins-Kentucky Derby-$2,011,581) and
RACHEL ALEXANDRA-(Ken Oaks, Preakness)- the earner
of $1,618,354.

2...We have been collecting information on MILLIONAIRE
earning racehorses for over a year now because they represent
the absolute pinnacle of achievement and its a measurable
comparison with all other horses in competition at the moment.

3..I think that this information will give newcomers into the
breeding and racing ranks some odds to consider, an aim or
target , or an idea of their chances of breeding a super star.

4...My parents and 2 sisters have carefully kept and beautifully
appointed properties that have been mooted as million dollar
properties and we joined the club ourselves, which all helps
to be able to keep a very expensive racehorse. Reminds me
that to make a small fortune racing horses, you need to start
with a large fortune.

5..We selected RED MAGIC's sire Istidaad to come to
New Zealand, and he won $1,757,236 and was a G1
winner and about 9 time G1 placed. He ran 2000m in
1m 59.4 when winning the G1 Australian Cup and over
1800m in the G2 George Main Stakes he ran 1m 45.32,
so was a very serious racehorse.

6...We also trained, and raced a colt called MAGIC MILLION
over 30 years ago. He had a phenomenal finishing burst which
was predicted on his breeding methods. Among his wins, he
came from last to be first twice at Trentham but unfortunately
he broke down several times.
We have endeavoured to include the same MAGIC METHOD
that he had into RED MAGIC's pedigree, hence his name.

Yesterday was a really nice sunny day, and after I took his
cover off, he was rearing in the air, flying around the paddock,
snorting and really putting on a great show for all the neighbours.
Even in the middle of winter, he has a nice shiny, healthy coat.
Was able to settle him down and get him wormed this
morning even though he wanted to rear, rush around, bite
and play. He is alert, physical and very well at the moment,
probably overfed for a horse not in work, so keen to get him
away into pretraining in a couple of weeks.

7... RED MAGIC is bred on a cross of 2 MILLIONAIRES.
His sire ISTIDAAD-($1,757,236) across the MILLIONARE
earning broodmare sire MOUNTAIN CAT-($1,478,901)

8...The special crosses in this pedigree were known about 6
or 7 years ago when research revealed a very powerful
method. Since that discovery we have noticed more than 14
current MILLIONAIRES racing that have the special
combination of crosses in their pedigrees, and in most cases it
is the primary or main cross in their makeup.

9...With this impetus, we've been actively looking for and
collecting data on horses that reached this magical status.
The aim is to delve into these pedigrees thoroughly and
see just what is making them tick, check the consistency of
the background intensities, check for the variations on the
main themes that Nature rewards, and to increase knowlege
on neccesary trends, selection, and ancestor performance.

10..There are dozens of ways that horses can be matched
and compared, such as number of races won, amount of
money won, Free handicap rankings, Match Rracing, number
of G1 or Graded Stakes won, Timeform Ranking, speed
ratings etc.

11...In the gathering process, I soon realized that ranking
horses on MILLIONAIRE earnings did not always measure
the best because of differences in time and locations, but it
does isolate and identify a very special group of horses.

12...Many potential champions just never get into a major
Stakes Race because they break down, have an accident,
are poorly trained, or are rushed off to stud prematurely.

13...Also, there is a great disparity in Stakes on offer in
certain countries. New Zealand cannot compete with the
vast resources of Australia. Italy cannot compete with
the U.S.A. and Britain can't compete with Japan/Hong Kong.

14...Initially, I thought I might be able to collect data on about
200, perhaps up to 300 MILLIONAIRES, but its been an
eye-opener as the painstaking search kept adding and adding
names to the list, but my method has probably only allowed
me to find about half the possible candidates. Just wish I had
access to the Jockey Club lists, or someone would kindly
publish a definitive list from a source like the current USA
AMERICAN RACING MANUAL.

15...Like all research into technical areas, someone, usually
individuals, have to put in countless thousands of hours
of painstaking data collection so that it can be analyzed carefully.

16...We have been really surprized with the huge upsurge
over the last few years with the huge increase in MILLION
DOLLAR races being carded and made available.

17...Even here in little New Zealand, we had an inititive
developed and implementated with Government help last year.
The $2 million Kelt Capital stakes and the $1million Karaka
sales incentive race have been added to by another four more
million dollar races. eg..$2.2 million Derby, $1 million Auckland
Cup, $1 million 2000 Guineas, and $1 million Telegraph Sprint.

18...There is a difference in the value of the dollars being
offered in different countries. The Australian dollar is worth
over 20% more than New Zealand dollars. The USA
dollar is worth 40% more, and the Euro is worth 200% more.

19...I do have an old 1966 THE AMERICAN RACING
MANUAL and it lists 174 horses that won over $300,000
and due to the lowered value of money at that time, only 5
of those horses were actual MILLIONAIRES over 40 years
ago in the days before the following very high and continual
inflation rises.

20..Looking at the list, and number of wins etc, it would appear
that every one of these horses would rank as MILLIONAIRES
today based on the money available for the same races today,
that they won many years ago.

21...This shows clearly that inflation spoils the ability to be able
to make a fair comparison of racing class when comparing
the best racehorses of different eras.

It does make a good comparison with horses that raced against
each other in the same time frame many years ago, and it does
compare present day horses against each other where a
graduated difference can be seen between those that have won
over a Million dollars and those that haven't at the present time.

22...What struck me most forcefully was the huge number
of wins some of those older greats achieved.

Without making an exhaustive comparison, it seems that there
were sounder, tougher horses that raced and won more often
40 years ago, especially in the USA compared with today.

23..Here are examples from the 1966 AMERICAN
RACING MANUAL. Llook at the soundness, toughness
and ability to repeat of these examples.

2 horses had more than 40 wins
2 horses had more than 35 wins
7 horses had more than 30 wins
11 horses had more than 25 wins
34 horses had more than 20 wins
52 horses had more than 15 wins.

24..Compare that soundness and toughness with the
breakdowns, injuries and defections among this years
and last years USA classic contenders.

25...Having just worked through 8 catalogues of the 2008
September Yearling Sale held at Keeneland, I have been
struck by the large number of commercial matings which are
totally unbalanced. A huge number of sires with very restricted
racing careers are being used. An overemphasis is being
placed on matching speed with speed, and this tends to
produce shorter pasterned horses with less shock absorbtion.
Plus it produces horses which are unbalanced physically, and
leads to many precocious youngsters being overstressed as
2yos.
Speed x speed matings tend to mature early, and fail to train on.
They also have limitations with distance, and being on the
outer edge of Natures continual search for balance, they tend
to be less able to repeat performances at 3,4,5 and 6 years
of age when mature middle distance conformation horses
are showing their toughness and have the build to wind up,
accelerate at the end of their races and repeat top
performances year after year.

26..The Commercial breeders find it much easier and much
quicker to put Black Type sires to Black Type mares/families
where the speed comformation produces better muscle and
a more mature yearling for the sale ring.

27..To put classic and staying bred yearlings in the ring can
produce a proportion of immature yearlings, finer builds, and
attract less bids. Staying bred yearlings take more time and
it definitely is much harder for the breeder to ensure class or
speed is put into this staying framework.

28..I wonder if the lure of lucrative Stallion Fees, greed,
commercial breeding for huge yearling returns, determined
selection for speed traits, over-emphasis on early 2yo speed
for ever increasing glittering rewards, or over reliamce on
drugs are affecting the soundness of American racehorses.

29...This is a concern to us here in New Zealand, because we
have gone from a few USA bred stallions at stud here in the
60's and 70's progressively through to a total dominance of
USA breeding in our stallions.

30...We had a reputation for soundness, toughness and stamina,
but our commercial breeders have mostly become dedicated
Sales yearling sellers. The dozen major studs have achieved
huge success and many minor studs have disappeared.

31...The emphasis now seems to be on precosity, early
maturing, early growth, and good muscling for the sale ring.
This seems to have resulted in an overall growth in sprinting
speed, less hardiness, more breakdowns, and less sounder,
tougher and stamina orientated horses being produced.

32...The best type that breeders should be aiming for is the
Classic 3yo that will win the middle distance classic races,
and then will be even more mature and tougher to win the
richly endowed Cups races as 4yo. These are sound, tough
types we want to be the best sires of the next generations.
These staying horses have real speed as well, and have often
demonstrated their ability to finish over top of the sprinters.

33..However, these horses are rare, and much harder to
breed. It is probably up to 5 times easier to breed a useful
horse by putting a good speed sire to a good speed mare,
allowing for the hybrid background, and common methods
of breeding principles to provide the necessary stamina to
get the minimum distances and allow slightly further.

34...The Major breeding studs in NZ alluded to above have all
increased their acreage 2, 3 or 4 times over. This indicates their
commercial pedigrees and emphasis on speed are working well
and resulting in good profitable returns. All these studs have
good numbers of staff-(although, we've heard their
universal grumblings at the sales. Their consensus is that
they appear to work long hours for less than enviable pay
rates) and the acquisition of these extended properties has been
very beneficial in minimizing the Stud owners tax liabilities.

35...It is now harder to breed a maiden winner because of the
increase in basic speed across the board. Maiden sprints are
being won in 2 to 3 seconds faster time than several decades
ago, forcing intending new breeders and owners to apply
extremely good selection techniques including a high
component of speed in the ancestry of their new horses.

36...Thoroughbred breeding in New Zealand seems to be
following the trend in Europe, USA and Australia which
specialized over the last few decades putting speed horses
to speed mares. We already have evidence of the several
very predictable patterns of earlier maturity, fading, inability
to improve with age, and decay of staying ability.

37...The much vaunted imported Shuttle sires have not made
an impact on our speed records, but have made horses two
to three times more expensive to buy. This places an ever
increasing burden on the poor owner, and it is clear that the
middle-man Stud owners , the Yearling Sales Companies, and
the millions going to the Shuttle Stallion Owners overseas are
the only ones that are making a whole pile of money.

38...If you are a new owner, then you need to stop blindly
following the policies of the above groups of people who are
very organized in their endeavours to make you pay them an
excessive amount of money. You need to get into a position
where you can write the rules. You need to work out a strategy
where the existing structure can be used to your benefit when
you add further value to your product. You need to be able to
select horses of merit from whats available and be able to
identify the potential champion from among the dozens or
hundreds of highly priced ones that will not perform. Again,
knowledge, thorough research and sound thinking should be
essential parts of your plan along the road to consistent success.

39...With Stake Monies only increasing by about 50% in
recent times, owners are worse off than previously. Feed,
transport, farrier, training costs and just about all other
expenditures have doubled or tripled. However, Stud Fees
have soared out of sight in numerous instances. As a general
guide, all Stud Fees in New Zealand should be halved, and
the top half of the Australian Stallions would be much fairer
if they were reduced to a third of their advertised Fee.

40..The yearling Sales are a contrived money making operation
and bear almost no correlation with the actual ability the
horses will demonstate on the racecourse. As a rule of thumb,
about 1 high priced horse out of 10 will succeed and return a
profit on it's purchase price.
OVER 90% FAILURE RATE.
Make sure you are highly selective in your choices!!

41....Looking at the 1966 AMERICAN RACING MANUAL
again, I added up the 1st 100 highest priced yearling sold at
auction to get a rough percentage of the number that would
have earned enough to repay their purchase price.
Out of the top 100, I FOUND ONLY 7 EARNED AN
AMOUNT IN EXCESS OF THEIR PURCHASE PRICE.
This backs up the rule of thumb of 1 in 10 quite well. In fact
when agistment, breaking, training and racing costs are
added, those horses making a profit for their owners could
very well recede to about 3 or 4 in each hundred.

42...These figures must be a big ALARM BELL for an
intending buyer who has very little knowledge of pedigrees,
breeding principles, conformation etc. and therefore has no
demonstrated advantage when bidding against more
knowledgeable buyers.

43....Don't forget these 100 horses are the top or best and
many people were prepared to pay the best money for them.
This probably means they looked well, were well grown with
good muscling, passed the walking test, had the most successful
sires and the best of families, and related to many Stakes
Winners. As the buyers were prepared to pay a lot of money
for them, we could also asssume they had the best training
that money could buy, YET ONLY 7 OUT OF 100
EARNED ENOUGH TO REPAY THEIR PURCHASE.

44...Perhaps your first purchases should be away from the
highest priced lots, perhaps you should get expert help from
the most knowledgeable trainers on conformation, faults,
type, althletic ability, legs and action, and ensure your
intended pedigrees have very good competitive speed.

45.. Then you need to delve into the background of many
hundreds or thousands of the absolute best gallopers and
ensure the principles that helped them become standout
gallopers appear in your pedigrees....Sounds simple?

46...If the 3 or 4 horses out of each hundred that will
realize a profit for the new owner is correct and holds
good today, THEN WE CAN ASSUME THAT MOST
PEOPLE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING MATINGS
DO NOT KNOW THE NECESSARY PRINCIPLES OF
SELECTION, SPEED, STAMINA, CONFORMATION,
TYPE, HITTING PREPOTENCY, BUILD-UP OR OTHER
IMPORTANT PRINCIPLES NEEDED TO BREED
OUTSTANDING RACE-HORSES.

47...To succeed, you will need to acquire all this information.

48...Perhaps in your initial plan, you would be advised to
set a BUDGET for the amount of money you would be willing
to pay for your first horse or horses. Remember, there will be
thousands of other horses on offer later in the sale, and the next
year and the year after, so the next tool would be PATIENCE.

49..To minimize the risk, select some good partners and form
a syndicate, but remember even if the group allows more
capital, the higher priced ones are notorious for not throwing up
very many top class gallopers, so shop for quality at VALUE-
FOR-MONEY-RATES.

50..Remember, you still have to buy ABILITY & QUALITY
and CONFORMATION and GOOD BREEDING.

51...A huge number of the MILLIONAIRE EARNING
GALLOPERS I have been studying continually slip through
the sales rings for what can best be described as BARGAIN
BASEMENT PRICES.

52...Some of the constants apart from the generally lower
prices, are that they are indeed very rare, that they do come
in all shapes and sizes, but they can all gallop, so their
conformation and action must be in line with Natures
requirements to withstand the stress of racing.

53...They seem to have multiple talented gallopers close up,
or just behind their initial ancestors, and their pulmonary and
nervous systems are exemplary and highly developed and
efficient.

54..The other constant we have found is the intensity of the
breeding methods and the discernible principles that seem
to also produce very constant results.

55..Over the last 12 months or so, we have been looking on
the internet, in New Zealand cataloques, Australian and
U.S.A cataloques, and we have found details of 951
horses that are listed with their earnings which surpassed
ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

56..During this search, nearly 3 times as many horses have
appeared which won over $300,000 but we have not
had the time to look at these pedigrees in detail yet, but
in a future article, we are contemplating comparing them
with the MILLIONAIRE EARNERS, as well as with
a similar sized group of horses that showed some form by
winning 1 or 2 races, and we already have a huge group
of NON WINNING horses to compare some of the more
involved breeding principles with.

57...we are not quite sure just what the ratio of named foals to
MILLIONAIRE EARNERS would be, but if we assume about
half or 450 of these horses were USA bred, and accept a
recently published figure of 354,878 named foals in the U.S.A
for the years 1991 to 2000, we can arrive at a very loose
GUESTIMATE OF 1 MILLIONAIRE FOR EACH 800
NAMED FOALS.

58...So if you are a newcomer to racing, and intend to breed
or buy a yearling that will win you a MILLION DOLLARS,
you would have a pretty reasonable chance of achieving that
target if you have about 800 shots at the target.

MODERATE PERFORMANCE IN FIRST 2 DAMS

1…If you have read the article previously written about our un-raced
2yo colt called RED MAGIC-(Istidaad - Catseeka), you will have
seen that I was a bit concerned about 4 or 5 things in the pedigree.

2…If you are a newcomer to racing or ownership, you will find
yourself in such a situation in the future, because if you list about 40
desirable traits/strengths/features that you would like to see in your
horses pedigree or conformation, then in all probability, you will not
find your horse has every box ticked.
So you will have to assess each trait and see just what you have, and
work out if your horse has enough superior traits to outweigh the
faults that you can see. All the faults of course need to be within
tolerable limits, and one very bad fault might be a deal-breaker.

In that case, be highly selective, and move on to the next horse.

3….Here is an example to illustrate the point.
..You want PERFECT front legs……Your horse may toe out slightly
..You want PERFECT back legs…….May be slightly bent, or sickle
..You want 1m7sec 1200m SPEED..May prove to be a 1m10s horse
..You want 3m15sec 3200m STAYING ABILITY…May plug and
get round in 3m25s
..You want PERFECT BALANCE….Might be loaded in shoulders
or be light muscled in hindquarters
..You want PRICE OF $20,000...may cost you $38,000 plus GST.

4….Many people I come across make snap buying decisions in seconds
and certainly do not have a prepared 40 item checklist. It allows them
to boost hype, bias and self delusion, so the main feature that
would guide their futures would be just LUCK or CHANCE.

5…FINANCE and BUSINESS should be based on facts, budgets
and thorough knowledge. YOU NEED A SOUND PLAN
FOR SUCCESS.

6…..RED MAGIC has a problem with his knees and hind leg in
an accident that worries me a bit, but the Vet thinks he will be fine,
so have to accept that opinion & put him into work, and see how
he copes with the stress of racing.

7….It is a worry if he will have enough speed to outweigh his staying
ancestry, but there are several methods to promote speed in his
pedigree, and he is an impressive mover in the paddock, so we are
hoping he has that essential speed to assist his staying potential.

8…One of the bigger worries is that his imported USA dam
CATSEEKA was not a big race winner(Although she was a race
winner) and the grand -dam was unraced-(But her 4 foals have all
been winners). All the rest of the dams out to 5 generations have
averaged over 2.6 Stakes Winners each.

9….This article is an attempt to reassure us that the standout
crosses in his pedigree could actually work on the racetrack, and
to help you realize that LITERALLY hundreds of really
outstanding gallopers have very limited ability in their first 2 dams.
This means that you may be able to rationalize your future pedigrees
if you are unable to tick the box for really outstanding racing ability
in your first 2 dams.

10.However, except for a handful of these pedigrees, the examples
listed below have some really outstanding ancestors, and some
brilliant and complicated breeding methods.

11…Although I am indicating that many really outstanding horses
do have a lack of racing ability in the first 2 dams, I would still
advise you to actively look for horses that have significant ability
in the first or second dam, because I believe that your chances of
success could be up to 10 times better.

12…The sheer number of outstanding horses, and the sheer merit of
their ability shown many times over, gives me huge confidence that
this colt has a really good chance of his outstanding genetic crosses
being able to help him to win some races.

13….To get the following list of horses, I checked a broodmare
sale Catalogue of an auction being held in the last few days here in
New Zealand, a book of Australasian Champions, 6 years of
NZ SW, and a local Waikato sale catalogue held over 30 years ago.

They are listed below if you would like to check any of the records.

NZ catalogue -National Weanling and Broodmare sale-May 2009,
Peter Pring’s Champion racehorses, 6 copies of Wrightsons Stakes
winners 1970 to 1975, Random catalogue-1974 Waikato Ylg Sale.

14…Below are listed the names of the 146 horses I found that
mostly raced in New Zealand, followed by the number of races
they won, names of 3 or 4 of the main races they won, and then
a notation to show the racing ability of the dam, 2nd dam, and
sometimes the 3rd dam.

horse here on the 148 horse New Zealand list, or equal any of the 78
horses found in the NZ Catalogues that raced completely or mostly in
Australia, we would also be very happy, and over the moon.
Check out the really outstanding gallopers in the Aussie list as well..

17…One of the inconsistencies here, which is very hard for the
mind to get around is the fact that there is none, or almost no ability
for 2 or 3 generations in a row along the dam line. And then when
put mainly to sires that themselves in the majority of cases were
not top class, suddenly comes forth with outstanding racing ability.

18...This means that there are more important principles such as
breeding intensity and outstanding gallopers back in the pedigree
which have to be taken into account when assessing your matings.

19…I have heard hundreds of times how bad bred many of these
good horses are, but when you examine the pedigrees in total,
there are multiple standout ancestors lurking reasonably close up
in the background of every one of these pedigrees.

20…If you are a newcomer to pedigrees, or buying, closely examine
THE WHOLE PEDIGREE to make sure nearly all the background
ancestors are high class. Don’t accept other peoples ill considered
opinions. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, set your own standards,
and take responsibility for your actions when they have been
the result of well considered research.

21…I have compiled every pedigree here out to 15 generations, and it is
euphoric to keep seeing brilliant breeding methods in the backgrounds
over and over. There are fantastic build-ups, complicated structures,
reinforced patterns, intricate ancestries and its mind-boggling just trying
to see all the happenings in the pedigrees that Nature is rewarding with
either speed, or stamina, or class.

22….Another hard to understand concept here is the fact that so
many of these examples have toughness, soundness and an ability
to race often against the best available horses. I went into the
pedigrees and found there were good ancestors in the background,
just don’t understand how you can harness it at will. Seems that
over large numbers, this ability can be passed on to a small
percentage of descendents. What struck me was the intense ancestry
and breeding methods that helped pre-potency and
speed/stamina/class allowed these horses to have the ability to win
these races, but the conformation to withstand the pressure was
reliant on physical traits passed on by the ancestry, and this was
in the background.

23…Quite a number of these great gallopers had conformation
problems, and this is a natural consequence of having the nearest
two dams with limited ability. One of the major problems is that
very inbred animals have faults doubled up and pass this on.

24…Some brilliant horses from certain lines seem to have brilliance
and fragility in double doses and they are passed on in combination
and you can’t get one without getting the other.

25…Bonecrusher had a pronounced leg deviation which came down
like many others from his Star Kingdom line. So many of the
Oncidium and Gate Keeper stars broke down because of the legacy
from the Alcide sire line. There are traits of unsoundness,
temperament, lack of size, sulking, quitting, slow starters, hard track
specialists, wet track specialists, and coarse bone which are very
well known in the progeny of sires at stud at the moment, but libel
and law-suits favour secrecy and inhibit accurate information being
made available which would help breeders.

26….If this list seems extensive, and astounding while illustrating
the point that limited ability in the 1st 2 or 3 dams has resulted in
hundreds of top line horses, you may be blown away by the fact
that I found nearly 200 other horses that were only slightly inferior
to these, and which could qualify, and some with even better ability
that would have qualified on one or two limited dams, but had some
performance somewhere so these examples were passed over,
and not included…So the above list is by no means exhaustive,
and a case could be made for listing nearly 300 other examples..
SO, DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THIS TRAIT, IF THE REST
OF THE CRITERIA IS OUTSTANDING.

27…A development over the last 10 to 15 years has seen
SELECTION operating in the main yearling sales.
This business inititive has put a PREMIUM on
PERFORMANCE along the dam line and BLACK TYPE
performers in the near removes of the family.

28..The result has been a doubling of putting the BEST TO
THE BEST, the selection of fewer high quality commercial
Sires, just about every top mare going to one of a dozen
High class sires, a big lowering of quality going to fringe
Sires outside the top dozen, AND MUCH HIGHER PRICES
FOR THE SELECT or COMMERCIAL YEARLINGS.

29…The greater returns have resulted in more money for
the auctioneers, for the breeders operating at this level,
plus higher Stud Fees for the best stallions and their owners,
and the ability to fund expensive SHUTTLE sires that
possess superior pedigrees and racing ability.

30….Overall, the rising costs have put a large burden on
the owners who pick up the tab for all costs in the industry.
Their costs have double and tripled, stakes up until recently
had moved upwards very slowly, and the owners now have
to specialize towards SPEED, otherwise they would not be
able to compete even in Maiden races which are run at a
much faster rate than previously.

31…Unless owners can find more money to compete with
buying the best bred yearlings, pay more for all Industry
related costs, put emphasis on speed, they RUN THE RISK
OF BEING LEFT BEHIND.

32..This is why SYNDICATION has increased dramatically in
recent years. However, very sharp business people have added
another dimension where owners have had huge padded costs
added to their already high priced involvement in this Industry.
NEW OWNERS NEED TO INVOLVE THEMSELVES MORE,
GATHER MORE INFORMATION, MAKE BETTER DECISIONS.

33..These examples here show clearly that the business decisions
to make money are not necessarily in line with Nature’s principles.
All the business people concerned certainly have increased their
chances of making an increased profit(At the expense of the owners)

34..These commercial yearlings that are making 5 and 10 times the
price of bygone years are often OVERFED, UNSOUND, LACK
CONSTITUTION.

35…THEY ALSO HAVE A HIGH FAILURE RATE. Would be
interesting to make a statistical study of every commercial yearling
from the Select Sale for 10 years. In the absence of accurate
information, I would guess about 1 in 10 would ultimately end up
as successful racehorses and pay their way. (90% FAILURE RATE?)

36…Of course, if you go the CHEAPO way, then your task would
be definitely harder to find a good racehorse that would pay it’s way.

37…As a matter of course, you would have to contend with less
successful breeding by sire and dam, less performance up close
in the ancestry, more faults, usually less pre-potent parents,
less well related or successful family, less qualified people
putting the principles together, less qualified rearing, and less
chance of getting to the best trainers.

38…YOUR ODDS OF GETTING A GOOD HORSE FROM
BELOW OR OUTSIDE THE COMMERCIAL ELITE COULD
BE AS LOW AS 1 HORSE IN A HUNDRED, even though we
have given a couple of hundred examples with possible 300 more
highly successful racehorses.

39…Don’t be misled, the odds are against you .SO THIS SHOWS
HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK,
LESSEN THE RISKS, & INCREASE YOUR CHANCES
WITH GOOD JUDGEMENT.
